Homily for the All Saints' Day - Mt. 5:1-12
Canon Dr. Daniel Meynen
" Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: «Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.» "

Today is the feast, the great feast of all the saints! All those who are in Heaven, enjoying the glory of God and happiness without end, we honour them and we celebrate them because they have won the victory: we celebrate the triumph of all those who, thanks to God and to Mary, have reached the shore of the eternal homeland, that of God, and that of the Angels, victorious in their limitless obedience! The Church invites us to celebrate in joy and rejoicing this multitude of beings - men, women, and angels of all species - who believed in the Word of God, in this Word which was incarnated in Christ and which opened for us the door of the eternal kingdom by Its victory on the wood of the Cross! "He who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne." (Rev. 3:21)
" «Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.» "
The kingdom of Heaven will be shared by all those who, on earth, behave as though they are really poor in spirit: those who exercise poverty of heart during their life here below are the ones who will receive the promised reward and inheritance! Only those who detach themselves from the possessions of this world will enter Heaven for eternity! Heaven is for the poor and for them alone! The Lord said so to us many times: "Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!" (Mk. 10:24) Just look at all the saints of Heaven: may their example stimulate us to act as they acted! They were all poor in heart: they are now rich with a richness of which we cannot conceive, a richness which only the Gift of God, that is to say his Holy Spirit, can equal!
" «Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.» "
The Saints of Heaven arrived in this place of delights and of happiness only after having passed numerous tests and overcome numerous temptations. They followed Christ on his way of the cross, and it was by this royal route that they entered Heaven! The first reading of today tells us very clearly: " «Who are these, clothed in white robes, and whence have they come?» ... «These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.» " (Rev. 7:13-14) The passage towards Resurrection is the Passion of the Lord, this Passion in which we are invited to participate in order to add to it this thing which seems to be missing, as stated by Saint Paul (cf. Col. 1:24).
"To him who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna." (Rev. 2:17) Let us receive with joy and great confidence this hidden manna! Let us receive Communion on this day with great charity and deep faith! Let us ask the Lord to carry us away with Him to this beautiful Heaven which he is promising us! Let us ask Mary for the grace to remain faithful to God up until the end of our lives! May the Eucharist of today be the most beautiful one of our lives!
