Homily for the twelfth Sunday of the year - Year A - Mt. 10:26-33

" Jesus said to his disciples: «So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the dark, utter in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim upon the housetops.

" «And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father's will. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

" «So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.» "

Homily:

" Jesus said to his disciples: «So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the dark, utter in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim upon the housetops.» "

Today, we live in the age of technology. In a way, we are sometimes better able to understand, and make our own, the words of Jesus. It is true that in every age men have hidden themselves to murmur some secret in their neighbor's ear. But now we often see men and women make use of a small device known as an "earphone" which connects them to their telephone, or to the office of their director, in the case of the host of a television show...

This earphone allows us to hear, in the hollow of our ear, our boss's orders, or news from our friend or our children. An earphone can also serve as a hearing aid, alleviating a hearing problem. These two examples can help us to understand what is done in us by the Holy Spirit, who is there to remind us of the words of Jesus (cf. Jn. 14:26), by speaking to us in the hollow of the ear of our heart... For the Holy Spirit is our guide and our teacher, but above all he is our friend and our confidant!

It's true that God does not need to use an earphone to speak to us. But, sometimes, do we not receive signs or warnings: a tragic accident from which we barely escaped, or the conversion of someone dear to us and for whom we have prayed much? Let us take a look at our life and see what God has written there. Then let us not hesitate to proclaim from the rooftops the blessings of the Mercy of the All-Powerful!

" «And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father's will. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.» "

The combat of faith is a spiritual combat! Our battle for the Kingdom of God in Heaven and on Earth is a combat that, throughout the ages, has taken the form of true psychological warfare. Each year brings its share of martyrs: may they pray for us! But each day brings a certain number of people who, vigorously, strengthened by the Power of the Holy Spirit, resist the temptation of the contemporary world: a life without God... You too, who read these lines, resist! Plug in your earphone! Listen to the voice of the Teacher, confide in your Friend! Pray to the Most Blessed Virgin Mary!

" «So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.» "

The Apostles saw Jesus dead and resurrected. This is why they could say: "This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses." (Acts 2:32) We who have not seen Jesus are also witnesses of his Resurrection: it is our faith that tells us of it! For our faith makes us participants in the Resurrection of Christ! If, unfortunately, we did not believe that, then our faith would be in vain...

We are witnesses of the Resurrection: we have conquered the world, through our faith (cf. 1 Jn. 4:4)! We listen to what the Spirit says to the Churches (cf. Rev. 2:11)! We have plugged in our spiritual earphone: through Mary, we follow the Spirit, who reminds us of the words of Jesus!
